DecentralizedWastewater.org Newsletter for October 2025

EPA's Updated "A Homeowner's Guide to Septic Systems for Tribal Communities" Document Is Now Available

Last week, the US EPA released a new and updated version of their "Homeowner's Guide to Septic Systems for Tribal Communities" handbook, a freely available resource for all to download. Per the EPA announcement:

"The original guide, published in 2013, has been widely used by IHS Area Offices and Tribal environmental and health departments to help Tribal homeowners and communities understand, operate, and maintain their onsite wastewater systems.

After more than a decade of use, EPA and IHS gathered insights on how the guide has served communities and where improvements could be made. In 2024, EPA began revising the guide with input from IHS Area offices and EPA Tribal Coordinators. The updated version streamlines the original content, includes maintenance trips tailored to Tribal audiences, and features new graphics highlighting the diverse regions where Tribal communities are located. We are very grateful to IHS for their support in making this a valuable resource for Tribes."

Be sure to download the document at the link below and share it widely in your networks!

The Latest Wastewater Conferences: A Review

As always, our team had a wonderful time at WEFTEC in Chicago at the end of September! We appreciate everyone who stopped by our booth to chat about the WaterOperator.org program and to learn about the historical wastewater research that was done at the Illinois State Water Survey (which included septic systems!) We were also able to tell some of the new connections we made about DecentralizedWastewater.org too — Welcome to this newsletter, for those in that group!

For those that missed WEFTEC, you can see the highlights of the conference and exhibition from WEF at this page.

In other conference news, while this year we will not be attending next week's Onsite Wastewater Megaconference in Sandusky, Ohio, we wish safe travels and the best of times at the conference to all attendees. We're looking forward to seeing pictures, reading about the highlights, and checking out the conference presentations when they become available! Remember, if you have not registered, online registration is now closed — but limited on-location registration at a higher rate will be available. Contact NOWRA for more information.

Finally, it's not too soon to start thinking about attending next year's WWETT Show! As usual, the 2026 WWETT Show will be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, and it will run from February 16-19. While attendee registration is not yet open, the conference hotels are now available to book. The organizers are also now accepting nominations for the show's Young Professionals Awards.

NEIWPCC Supports Massachusetts’s Efforts to Limit Pollution From Septic Systems

The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission, or NEIWPCC, is dedicated to advancing water quality in the northeastern United States, where the average use of septic systems in considerably higher than the rest of the country. NEIWPCC's septic system initiatives aim to support Title 5, the Massachusetts regulations that legislate how to install, use, and maintain septic systems. Last month, NEIWPCC published an article that provides an in-depth explanation of their Title 5 programs, which include soil evaluator training, system inspector certification, and public dialogues about septic systems.

Great Lakes Microplastics Summit: October 22, 2025

A promotional graphic for the the 2025 World Environmental Health Day on September 26, organized by the International Federation of Environmental Health.

We are coming to a greater understanding that microplastics are everywhere, and septic systems are no exception. While research on microplastics in septics is still in its infancy, microplastics research at large is not. If you are interested in learning more about the microplastics issue in general, including their effect on human/environmental health and the full impact of their widespread pollution, consider attending the 2025 Great Lakes Microplastics Summit.

This free virtual event, hosted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), will unite scientists, professionals, policymakers, and community members to explore the effect of microplastics on freshwater systems.
