Happy SepticSmart Week!

The big week is here! We hope you already have a plan in place for celebrating this week and communicating the ideals of the SepticSmart program, but it's certainly not too late to whip something together if you still need to. See our shortlist of some of our favorite resources to share with homeowners here:

SepticSmart Week is also a great time to spread the word to your colleagues about DecentralizedWastewater.org and the resources we provide to decentralized/onsite/septic system professionals. Here's links to the resources we provide:

Don't Forget the SepticSmart Quick Tips!

A key part of the EPA's SepticSmart messaging and programming are the seven SepticSmart Quick Tips, which explain to homeowners the fundamental steps to properly caring for a septic system, how septic systems work, what not to put down the drain, the necessity of testing wells, and more.

Many homeowners remain unaware of these basic principles. It's the job of everyone in the decentralized wastewater community to teach as many septic system users about them as we can, even when it's not SepticSmart Week.

Your Guide to SepticSmart Week 2024

By Kim Peterson

"It’s typical of a homeowner to have an 'out of sight, out of mind' approach to their septic system. When it’s functioning, what is there to think about? They don’t want to spend money to inspect and pump a system when there’s nothing wrong with it. They just don’t get it if it hasn’t been explained to them in a way they can understand. Participating in SepticSmart Week is an easy way to increase your homeowner education efforts. The Environmental Protection Agency created SepticSmart Week as an annual event focused on educating homeowners and communities on the proper care and maintenance of onsite septic systems — and they’ve done a lot of the hard work for you."
