Cataloging State-Level Professional Organizations in the US

A map of the United States that shows which states have a NOWRA-affiliated septic professional organization, which states have an unaffiliated septic professional organization, which states only have previously active and now defunct organizations, and which states have no organization at all.

Are you a member of your state’s organization for onsite/septic/decentralized professionals? Just as the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association does at the national level, there are many advantages to membership to a state organization, including educational opportunities, industry advocacy, and networking.

As a new permanent webpage on DecentralizedWastewater.org, we have recently compiled a list of each state organization that we track in our Event Calendar and Resource Library. We hope this list will be a useful reference for anyone moving between states, seeking to add a license in a new state, or seeking a local community of septic professionals.

We have listed every state organization of which we are aware. If we are missing any organizations that you are a part of or that you know of, or if we have used any incorrect or out-of-date information, please let us know. We have also noted which states, to the best of our knowledge, do not have any active organizations or once had an organization that now appears to be defunct.

This January:
Meet Us at the Michigan Onsite Wastewater Conference

Septic professionals in Michigan have the first state conference of 2026 to look forward to, from January 6-7, in East Lansing. The 74th annual Michigan Onsite Wastewater Conference will provide education for septic tank service providers, local health departments, engineers, and many others concerning industry trends, regulatory changes, and the latest technologies.

13.5 CSE credits are available to attendees, which is a great incentive to attend. If you need any additional encouragement to register, however, consider that attendees will have a unique opportunity: You’ll be able to meet our DecentralizedWastewater.org team!

We were very pleased to receive an invitation to present at the conference by the organizers. Though the agenda is not yet fully finalized, we are currently set to present the session "Online Support and Resources for Onsite Wastewater Professionals" at 3:00 pm on January 6th.

Early bird registration is open until December 5th for $225, after which the cost will increase to $260 for full-conference attendance. We hope to see you there!

TT064 – Lessons from RCAP’s
Private Well Technical Assistance Network

The promotional graphic for Tap Talk episode #64, featuring a photo of guest Cindy Brookes; and a quote from Cindy: "When you think you've seen it all, your run across the next 'Oh, how can that be?' situation. You never learn it all. You're always being questioned, because everyone is different.".

In TT064, we bring you another private well-focused episode. Our guest is Cindy Brookes, a seasoned technical assistance provider at the Great Lakes Community Action Partnership, a division of RCAP. In this role, Cindy has assessed over 300 private wells and counseled well owners on how to proceed with their well challenges, and made significant use of the Private Well and Spring Assessment Tool that our team developed in conjunction with RCAP. Cindy tells Jennifer and Steve about the ins and outs of the job, as well as the importance of these assessments in the quest to more widely educate well owners.
