Encouraging Private Well Testing During National Groundwater Awareness Week and Beyond
Were you able to celebrate National Groundwater Awareness Week (GWAW) last week? This annual occasion began in 1999, to promote the responsible development, management and use of groundwater. Groundwater advocates, led by the National Ground Water Association, use the week to highlight their local water issues, promote groundwater protection, and remind private well owners to test, treat, and maintain their wells.
Each year during GWAW, our sister program The Private Well Class leads the Pledge to Test Campaign to support the drive to increase well testing. Well owners who pledge are entered into a drawing to win one free Essential Well Water Test from Tap Score, while everyone who pledges is able to receive 10% off any well water test kit using the code PLEDGE2026 through April 15.
While our team has already closed this year's campaign and drawn the winner of the test kit, we would like to ask that you keep GWAW and Pledge to Test in your mind for next year! That said, there is never a bad time to test a well that needs to be tested, and it's always a good time to emphasize to well owners the importance of keeping septic systems functioning properly for the safety of their drinking water.

Register for the National Environmental Health Association's Annual Educational Conference 2026! |
Registration is open for this August's Annual Educational Conference & Exhibition from the National Environmental Health Association! This year's AEC will be held from August 3-6, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center. We will again be sending a small team representing our Private Well Class and DecentralizedWastewater.org programs, and you will be able to find us in the exhibit hall!
This conference is an annual opportunity for the brightest minds in environmental health to connect and strengthen the professional field. Per NEHA:
"This year's theme, Woven Strong: The Environmental Health Tapestry, reflects how every thread, whether it's your expertise, your experiences, or your innovations, interlaces with others to create a stronger, more resilient future for public health."
Early bird pricing for registration is available until March 25, 2026. Abstract submissions for the poster hall are open until May 8, 2026. |

Join Us at the 2026 Private Well Conference! |
Our sister program, PrivateWellClass.org, is holding the 2026 Private Well Conference in Missoula, Montana, from May 19-21. This will be our sixth time holding the conference, following in-person events in 2017, 2019, and 2025; and virtual ones in 2021 and 2022.
The mission of the Private Well Conference is to serve the professionals who work with wells by providing valuable information and insights that can be taken home by attendees and used to benefit well owners across the country. Health department staff, lab personnel, extension educators, well drillers, environmental health professionals, and academic researchers are all among the audience we hope to most benefit from the conference.
We know that there is not often overlap between those who physically install/maintain wells versus septic systems. But, all the same, wells and septic systems are intrinsically linked. Most properties with one system are statistically likely to have the other one too. This means property owners need to know how to maintain and care for both systems. In addition, wells and septic systems are linked geologically through groundwater interactions. What happens in one impacts the other.
For this reason, many other professions concerning wells and septics do have overlap. Most prominently, environmental health practitioners commonly inspect and sign off on each. Health departments frequently house records for both residential wells and septic systems. Extension educators may work in outreach programs/offices that cover both systems. Lab personnel and academics run tests and perform research on the links between these systems as well as their links to broader groundwater systems.
So, if you work in this nexus between private wells and septic systems, we would love to host you at the Private Well Conference! While of course the agenda focuses heavily on private wells, we expect to have at least one presentation in the agenda covering primarily septic/decentralized topics.
Last year, our staff gave two presentations in this realm: “Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Assessment Tool: Lessons from Two Case Studies” and “Evaluating State Well, Septic Info for Extending Water and Sewer Lines.” While this year’s agenda and exact topics for decentralized presentations are still being developed, we expect them to be finalized soon and will make the agenda available as soon as possible.
Another great reason to consider attending the conference is that registration is entirely free! That means the only costs to attendees are transportation, lodging, and meals. Missoula is served by the Missoula Montana Airport (MSO), where service is provided by seven passenger airlines (including American, Delta, and United). The conference center is just six miles from the airport and right off of Interstate 90 in Downtown Missoula along the Clark Fork River.

TT068 – How the Be Well Informed Tool Educates Well Owners |
In Tap Talk’s 68th episode, Steve and Jennifer chatted with Kurt Rakouskas — a project manager at the Environmental Council of the States — about the organization’s cross-disciplinary work and its stewardship of the Be Well Informed tool. This free tool helps well users understand the results of water tests performed on their wells by translating the scientific and technical notation into plain language. This helps make clear if there is a problem indicated by the results, what the risks of any present contaminants are, and what the next steps should be for the well owner. |

Managing Surface Water Around Septics
Dr. Sara Heger writes that it's as important to pay attention to what's happening above a septic systems as what is going on below during a service visit. While surface water must be carefully managed for all systems, it is especially important for sites with shallow water tables and challenging soils. Check out the whole article for more on reading the terrain, the importance of grades, how to weather the storm, and using drains.
